Boarding
I am going to use the bus for the first time. Could you please explain the reservation and boarding procedures?
  • 1) Purchasing tickets
There are two main types of seating systems on expressway buses: Designated seating and free seating (order-of-arrival seating).
  • To board a designated-seating bus, you need to specify the departure time and the seat in advance. Reservations can be made starting a month and a day before the day of the trip online (Japan Expressway Bus Net, Hassha Alright Net, Highwaybus.com), at convenience stores, and the expressway bus ticket section in Tokyo Station. (The ticket-selling system and the day sales begin vary by route. Please check them in the list of bus operating companies.)
    * Ticket sales for the Tokyo⇔Kyoto/Osaka/Kobe lines begin two months in advance.
  • No reservations are required for free-seating (order-of-arrival seating) buses. You can board at the boarding bus stop in the order of your place in the waiting line, just as on local buses. There is no standing room on the expressway buses. Please take the next bus if all seats are filled.
    * If you are boarding at Tokyo Station, please purchase your ticket at the Yaesu South Exit ticket section on the day of the trip.
Tickets for the Narita Airport, Takao, Haijima/Kabe, and Kasukabe lines are not sold at the ticket section. Please purchase them on the bus on the day of the trip.
    * IC Cards issued by transportation service providers can be used for some lines. Please check here.
  • 2) Confirming the bus stop
The boarding dock differs by destination. Please check here.
  • 3) Boarding
A boarding announcement will be made 5–10 minutes before the departure time. Tickets are inspected when you board the bus. Please have them ready when boarding.
Are there restrictions on luggage that may be carried on board?
  • Since truck space is limited, please limit yourself to one piece of suitcase-size luggage.
    * Since rules vary by company, please inquire with the bus operating company in advance. A list of bus operating companies can be found here.
Can I bring pets on board?
  • Please check in advance with the company operating your bus.
